Leading Through Change

Edith Cowan University (ECU) is a forward-thinking institution renowned for fostering creativity and innovation. Western Australian-based ECU fosters creative thinkers and problem-solvers. Through industry-relevant courses, world-class research, and supportive learning environments, ECU cultivates leaders who are ready to shape the future.

ECU's move to a new city campus presented a unique opportunity to foster a culture of innovation and excellence. To ensure a smooth transition and maximise the benefits of the new campus, ECU recognised the opportunity to empower leaders with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate, lead and support the wider university through the ever-changing landscape of today.

This leadership program was designed to address the specific needs of ECU's senior leaders, with a particular focus on navigating and leading others through change. The program first launched as a pilot with a 3 x 3.5-hour virtual experience and a senior cohort of leaders including Executive and Associate Deans.

The design focused on building an understanding of stewardship and self-management; generative change; leadership mindsets – from hero to host; communication strategies to create dialogue and identify barriers and resistance; managing transitions and uncertainty; and the power of storytelling to inspire others.

A combination of evidence-based content and a creative digital design with elements such as peer consulting, collaborative discussion tool and paired ‘walk-n-talks’ led to a learning experience rich in reflection and real-world application.
